Take Part in the Tamerton Carnival on 6th May!
The historic Tamerton Carnival returns on Saturday 6th May to sweep through the streets of Plymouth. There is so much fun and excitement in store, plus amazing prizes to be won – including cash! Here’s a full roundup of all the day’s attractions, plus how you can become a part of the parade…
The annual Tamerton Carnival takes place in May and has been bringing family fun and laughter to the people of Plymouth since 1269. Traditional attractions include carnival floats, live music from bands and, of course, fancy dress aplenty. This year’s theme is ‘animals’, so some of the attractions, including a dog show will revolve around the theme – that should be easy for the dogs.
A long-running traditional is for the Lord Mayor to open the carnival before joining the parade procession along with the May Queen, Princess and Flower Girls. This starts at the top of the hill on Cunningham Road at 12.00pm and continues through to around 2pm.
The animal theme doesn’t stop with the attractions either, guests and carnival revellers can also dress up and take part in the entertainment – bunny ears at the ready – with a prize draw, live dancing and even rides. This year the west country’s leading provider of bouncy castles Mr Bounce will have a whole host of bouncy castles and inflatables for all to enjoy.
Once you’ve worked up an appetite dancing to music from the Liskeard Silver Band, you can also try some delicious refreshments, all lovingly made by local residents and suppliers.
In fact, just about everything for the parade has been designed by village locals, from the colourful bunting that adorns the streets to the floats themselves. You can join them too! There’s still time to enter your float or parade entertainment for this year’s carnival, so why not round up your closest (and most talented) friends and family to be a part of the action?
The Tamerton Carnival really is a part of Plymouth’s tradition and is a fantastic opportunity to bring the whole town together to celebrate our community and even our animals.
